Sahajzha emailed me this clip of wonderfully skilled flamenco belly dance artist named Isodore Bushkovski. Her movements are truly captivating, and her dance piece is a story within itself. She is highly skilled in her art form. She can transcend one style of dance to another without a flaw. She has great dance posture and powerful presence on stage. Wonderful way to blend two different styles!
I like to call this little video number "The Flamenco Belly dance Novela"
This choreography tells a story and this is some of the story that I interpreted from this performance. The story seems to be about a woman becoming her own. The woman is linked to the past and is torn between two worlds. She dances between two worlds to create a place where she can dwell and claim own identity. My favorite part of the performance is when the older dancer who seems to play the mother role appears on the stage to hand over her veil to her daughter.
It's a powerful part of the dance passing the traditional art from mother to daughter. Giving her the veil is the mothers way of passing her wisdom and experience to her daughter. The mother then proceed to help the daughter dress as a dancer which I think is referring to the way the mother helps the daughter dress up on her wedding day. The dancer is then off by herself with two veils as her mother steps to the side and watch her daughter dance.
The mother never loses her presence within the dance piece because she remains sitting on a chair at distance within the room, like a shadow or a found memory for the daughter to look back upon for inspiration and support.
As the dancer is alone with her two veils, I had the impression the symbol was suppose to suggest that she performing her mothers dance. She is dancing and living the way she was taught by her mother. The performs beautiful energy between her two veils and finally realises one that symbolizes her past.
The Dancer is then alone with her one dark veil, the veil is a reflection of herself. She is alone now dancing with the method of her spirit. Very strong performance. I love it!
